NCCSL help for SMEs in Kalutara The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) with the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce (AFCC) and Hilfswerk Austria (HWA) distributed tsunami assistance to small and medium entrepreneurs in the Kalutara district at a ceremony at the NCCSL auditorium. The NCCSL received funds through HILFSWERK, Austria (HWA) which is the agent of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce working on this project. The Chamber established its SME Disaster Rehabilitation Project immediately after the tsunami and was active in helping the small and medium entrepreneurs to revive their businesses by providing assistance through kind and cash. The Chamber carried out surveys in Galle, Matara, Kalutara, Hambantota, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Ampara areas to assess the situation of the SME sector after the tsunami, through its Small and Medium Enterprise Association in the districts. The Chamber has already distributed coir as raw material and coir manufacturing machines to the affected businessmen in the Galle district. The latest project of the chamber with the Austrian Federation of Economic Chamber will assist the small and medium entrepreneurs engaged in industries such as manufacturing of footwear, furniture and wooden products, mosquito nets, poultry products, candle and red clay products, cake and confectionery, grinding mills, welding works, picture framing, herbal drinks and textiles. The feature of this latest project is that the entrepreneurs are given assistance by way of capital goods and raw materials to assist the entrepreneurs revitalise their businesses successfully by using such funds. Both organisations will have a monitoring team to supervise the utilisation of funds and also advise the recipients on proper utilisation. The total value of assistance of the project is Euro 70,000 or Rs. 8.4 million.
