Congratulations go out to Udayakantha Warnasuriya for bagging a Bronze Remi award at the 38th Annual Worldfest Housten International Film Festival for his film 'Shower of Gold (Ran Diya Dahara). The Bronze which he won for the 'Best Theatrical' award was selected from 33 countries with an entry of 4500 category films. Sri Lanka is honoured and proud to have film directors of this calibre who shows the world that though Sri Lanka is a small island it has potential people like Warnasuriya. It is time that Sri Lankan audiences appreciate Udayakantha Warnasuriya's films which always give a message, to the audience in a very simple way. He has the ability to Direct Award Winning Films, Comedies as well as Commercials. Starting with Maha Mera Usata which was a family film, Gini avi haa Gini Keli and Rajya Sevaya Pinisai portrayed a political scene, which is very common in our country, while Rosa Wasanthaya was for the young and the restless who wanted a Bollywood type of film which became so popular with the easy going film world. Udayakantha managed to show the power and the courage of the fairer sex in his film Yakada Pihatu and Bahu Bharya. His direction of the comedy, Bahu Boothayo showed the audience that there are so many different ways of making a popular comedy in Sri Lanka. In 'Shower of Gold (Ran Diya Dahara), again Udayakantha tries to portray the feelings of a wife, a disabled soldier and parents at a time of war. In this film Kamal Addharachchi's acting along with Jackson Anthony's make such an impression on the audience, that they feel justice has been shown by these two actors for the characters they depict. Geetha Kumarasinga acts her role so well that the entire audience is in sympathy with her and becomes so engrossed in the story, Henry Jayasena and Anula Karunathilake acting as parents, give everyone, the tender feelings of parents who have to go through the deaths of their two sons. Unfortunately Udayakantha's Ran Diya Dahara was screened at a time that the whole world was mourning for the tsunami victims and at that time the Sri Lankans were not in a frame of mind to enjoy a film. This film deserves to be screened again. |
