Nilaweli's
wonder
Fahima Farisz
It was the first time we went without any intention of wading in the waters of Nilaweli. We went there with great trepidation. It was a celebration of a family re-union. But the waters were so inviting that we could not resist. No great swimmer am I, but instinctively, I could wade and enjoy Nilaweli. Trincomalee being the hotbed of terrorist activity had earlier seen very few tourists. But now there is just a trickle. The tsunami has turned a brave few who could be seen enjoying the waters. Nilaweli Hotel is still to be repaired. The tsunami has taken it's toll on Trincomalee. No one just no one, could save it. But what of Trincomalee, is nothing going to be done to put it on the tourist map once more. A few hotels have been reconstructed and almost completed. But there are no tourists to be seen. Many moons ago Trincomalee, and Nilaweli especially, looked a foreigners' haven. Sea View hotel, which overlooks the Nilaweli, has been beautifully re-constructed, but here too there were only a few tourists. On inquiry we were told that tourists may begin to come after the Kandy Perahera. |
