Enchanting looks

It's all about life's, loves and pleasures that makes a person what she is and develops one's personality....

Two sides of the same coin, one is into active sports, while the other is into Nursing. But both of them hit common ground, they love to model. Not full time, the sportswoman says while the other is into serious modelling.

Suleka is the former and Konica is the latter. Umangi de Mel has delved into some of the details of their lives and here goes...

Suleka Roshini Dissanayake, a 23-year-old national basketball player, who's been to many places and seen quite a lot of the world.

"Sriyal Dissanayake, my father was into athletics. He was with people like Sunil Gunawardena, the well-known athletic personality. His speciality was the 100m. I'm probably influenced by him," says Suleka. Having been a basketball player at 'Our Lady of Victories' Convent Moratuwa, where she schooled. Suleka toured ever since she left school. She was selected to represent Sri Lanka in the Women's Asian Basketball Tournament at the Asian Games in 1997, for the first time, "I was the youngest in the team and we managed to get the 6th place."

Suleka has been a star, even during her school days as she won the award for the Best Player and Sri Lanka Colours at the same time. She has been to a number of countries like Malaysia, Thailand, India, Germany, China, Japan and the Maldives. She carries with her, beautiful memories of the losses and victories, that have built her personality.

"I was ever selected to pay for the Maldivian team. They select good players depending on their performances and it was fun playing for a totally strange country, and with players who spoke a different language, she says. Although a diehard sports person, Suleka also has a soft spot for modelling. She reveals that it's her past time, "I love it and do it for a change. I haven't got big hopes to go all the way or make it big as a model but it's fun. I've got a few friends who were into modelling."

She also won Ms Congeniality, at the Nature's Secret Beauty Pageant this year. "I've also done a few covers, teledramas and two song visuals. I did a visual with the 'Millennium Boys' for the first time on Television and the response was satisfactory, people knew I was a national basketball player".

Suleka reveals her passion for modelling but doesn't want to give up basketball for anything in the world.

"Basketball is my life," she claims. Suleka has been asked to take part in the Ms. Lanka contest organised by Art TV, but she just doesn't have the time to try her luck. It's a three-month training program and unfortunately I've got a basketball tournament during that time," she says sounding a little disappointed.

Barely having time for anything else, Suleka says she loves music and movies. "I don't do think I can do both I love modelling but just don't have time. I always think positively. After all, we are only human and therefore prone to make mistakes. And I always think twice, when it comes to decision-making. I believe in doing the right thing as much as possible".

"I love kids and it feels like heaven to be with them. You've got to learn to love people, that's probably why I'm living a pretty fruitful life," she concludes.

Twenty two-year-old Konica Dissanayake, yet another new face in the field of modelling, is studying hard to complete her degree in nursing in the United Kingdom.

"I completed my nursing diploma at Aquinas which is affiliated to the Middlesex University in the UK. Now, I'm taking IELTS lessons at the British Council to go abroad to finish the Degree," says Konica. Having done Bio Science in school, she's pretty much interested in successfully completing what she has already started.

"Unfortunately, we can't do Degrees in Nursing in Sri Lanka. So I managed to get a fifty per cent scholarship to do it abroad."Konica's got pretty famous with the Centigrade song 'Dark Angel'. Having modelled for the Style Magazine in 2000, Konica eventually got into commercials. "I've done lots of commercials for Elephant House, and at the same time, Dialog reload and Colombo Jewellery Mart", she says adding that she has signed a contract with 'Disney' and 'Beverley Street', "I also freelance for Bridal shows and I've been selected to play the key role in a film called 'Kali'."

She won the Ms Lanka Contest which was organised by the Lion's Club in 2004. Quite the busy body that she is, Konica has already completed visuals for a whole host of songs. "I may be a little busy but I always find time to do other stuff as well. I like music, dancing, swimming, tennis, badminton and most of all, it's travelling that I love. I may be doing lots of things, but my main achievement will be to be a good human being at the end of the day," she says sounding very determined.
