What's Your Fetish? by Rikaza Hassan
Each and everyone of us has some kind of fetish or the other. Whether it's for belts, shoes, leather, corsets or lingerie, we've all shown an unexplained and unavoidable obsession towards an inanimate object at least at some point of our lives.
"I am a certified leather freak. I wear a leather jacket whenever I go out other than for work that is," says Farzan. He claims to have every article of clothing that a guy requires made "out of leather." His room he says, "has that leathery smell, but I just love leather so much. I just can't help myself whenever I see some leather item on the window display." Corsets and lingerie are another universally acknowledged fetish of the females. Though corsets are hardly ever worn in Sri Lanka, there are yet still some who enjoy it. "I shop for corsets from abroad and not here. You get simply gorgeous ones made of everything from cotton to lace to silk. I prefer the one with the strings to tie rather than the button-up ones," says Miranda. She added that they help her maintain an hour-glass figure without going through the trouble of exercising as she wears it quite often during the day.
Jewellery is an accessory that members of both sexes have fetishes for. From delicate pieces to chunky stones to freaky designs, they capture the mind of at least one individual. "I am a huge ring freak. I wear rings on all ten of my fingers and I prefer them in silver," says Ruwan. His sister Nilanthi on the other hand is a huge fan of "simple gold jewellery. I collect those thin chains with tiny stones and delicate pendants. My mother always complains that I trouble her to buy me gold stuff all the time." Speaking to Maria she claims to "have a fetish for nails. I get them done every fortnight and I have a huge collection of false nails which I change on a daily basis to match my outfit. I also have an entire range of nail polish colours." Kasun on the other hand is besotted with his hair. "I wash it, shampoo and condition it every day. I oil it once a week and check the ends for splits every morning. I keep on checking on it throughout the day. All my friends make fun of me but I just can't help it. At least I have really good hair because of this."
Clothes, accessories, parts of the body, vehicles, whichever the category you fall into, fetishism affects us all. There really is no point in worrying over it as long as you do not get carried away with it and let it rule your life. We all like a little extras on the side, so go get fetishistic and have some fun! |

"I just love high heels. I've got 47 pairs so far
and I can't wait for it to turn fifty and then one hundred. I've been
collecting them since I was 15," says 17 year old Wathsala. "I ask
everyone to give me shoes, or preferably a substantial gift voucher at a
reputable shoe store whenever I am asked what I want," she adds. 
Though it may seem that fetishes such as these are restricted to the
fairer sex (I can almost imagine the guys reading this nodding their heads
sadly), the male sex have their equal and fair share. A lot of guys, for
instance exhibit an excessive preference for leather. Leather belts,
jackets, pants, wallets, head and wrist bands adorn them from head to toe.
Rhea on the other hand is obsessed with lingerie. She has all types of
the undergarment, "you name it, I've got it," and says she gets crazy
about them. "Whenever I walk into a clothes store and see the lingerie
section, I feel like I've been possessed. I just go nuts. I always end up
buying at least one item of lingerie." 
Celebrities too aren't exempt from this so called affliction. Matt
Damon has a fetish for leather, Cameron Diaz has one for very high-heeled
shoes and Lisa Mary Presley goes for corsets.
