Focus on challenges ahead - President

President's office has taken note of the Supreme Court determination that the next election to the office of President of Sri Lanka should be held in 2005.

The decision of the Supreme Court is final and binding. It is now the responsibility of the government to make the necessary arrangements to give effect to the decision of the Court, said a press release issued by the Presidential Media Unit.

The release further said:

Several critical issues face us in the challenging months ahead. The difficult security situation in the country and the deterioration in the ceasefire arrangements in the North and East need to be addressed urgently.

The post Tsunami reconstruction work on which many destitute and displaced families depend must proceed apace. The spiralling cost of world crude oil prices and other global factors necessitates that the management of our economy that we successfully exercise at present, cotinues so that our economy continues to grow while alleviation of poverty cotinues.

The two major political groupings in the country have selected their candidates for the election and the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition have declared their candidacy for the office of President.

President Kumaratunga remains committed to ensuring that there is a free and fair election in the country, especially in the North and East. The President's fervent wish is that the election campaign should focus on the issues and challenges that lie ahead and that we ensure a shared future, together, as a nation of diverse peoples.
