The Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (RRR) has identified 62 bridges to be rehabilitated in North and East at a cost of Rs.4 billion.

This rehabilitation project will be implemented under the Rehabilitation of Bridges in the North and East Project, RRR Ministry's Secretary M.S. Jayasinghe told the Sunday Observer.

"By the end of this year the Project will complete 2,654m length of bridges," added Jayasinghe.

He stressed that by the end of September 2006, the project would be completed. 28 bridges have been completed so far.

In a separate development programme, the Ministry of RRR has received Rs.380 million worth of heavy machinery from the Italian Civil Protection Department for the implementation of relief and rehabilitation activities in the North, East and Southern provinces.

Machinery donation includes- four road rollers, three lorry mounted gully emptier, four back-hoe loaders, five crawler tractors, two motor graders, seven tipping lorries, seven tippers, eight ton lorries, Nos. 3, 5,000 litre water bowsers, 3 wheel loaders and 5 crew cabs.

Jayasinghe said, they hope to use machines specially in tsunami-affected areas to clean debris, construct roads and also for other needs.

Gully emptier and water bowsers are required mainly for work in resettled enclaves.

They will be utilised by the Water Supply and Drainage Board or by local authority or by the Divisional Secretary in charge of new settlement.

He said, already the Ministry has drafted an action plan jointly with the Italian Civil Protection Department in the utilisation and the management of those machinery and vehicles and would jointly monitor the implementation of activities.

Jayasinghe concluded that the first consignment of vehicles will be handed over to the Ministry by the Italian Civil Protection Department tomorrow at the Machinery Service and Repair Division of Senok Trade Combine, No. 1, Wilimbulla, Henagama, Weliweriya.
