Alleviating suffering of tsunami victims Soroptimist International President visits Sri Lanka. Lynn Dunning newly appointed International President of the Soroptimist International visits Sri Lanka as part of her planned tour to visit tsunami hit countries within the Soroptimist International Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. A soroptimist for 20 years, she is an educationist by profession. She has been involved with human rights and continues to be an advisor on human rights to Bangladesh. Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation, for women in management, and the professions. Soroptimist International of Colombo and Kandy are affiliated to Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland. The Colombo Club which is over thirty years old has many ongoing projects, some of which are the: Prison Project - assisting in the rehabilitation of women prisoners by teaching them different crafts such as needlework, handicraft and sugar craft. The Street Children Project - which involves the funding of a pre-school for street children. The school for the differently disabled (School for the Deaf and Blind) Project in Ratmalana - conducting classes for children, needlecraft, cookery and presenting them with braille slates for their individual use. Thimbirigaswewa Village Community Development Project - funding and operating a pre-school for children in the village. Hospice - provide professional expertise to terminally ill cancer patients in Maharagama. Lynn's visit on this occasion is to see for herself and assess the damage caused by the tsunami and how Soroptimists in Sri Lanka have helped in the rehabilitation of women and children in the affected areas. Since the tsunami, Soroptimists, both in the Colombo and Kandy clubs have given priority to their work towards alleviating sufferings of the victims of the tsunami. |
