Where are the NGO dollars?
With reference to our news item with the above title which appeared in
our issue of August 14, World Vision National Director Yu Hwa Li says:
In actually, the US$ 11 million raised was passed by Cricket Australia to
World Vision to spend on relief and development in all tsunami affected
countries.
And, in the first six months of our agency's response in Sri Lanka alone,
we have spent $28 million on post-tsunami recovery.
As for the accusation that World Vision is 'earning profit' from tsunami
donations, this is untrue. World Vision Lanka and its sister agencies around
the world, are non-profit making organisations. World Vision has worked in
Sri Lanka for the past 28 years and is very proud of its record of working
closely with communities on aid and development projects. Our response to
the humanitarian needs after the Boxing Day tsunami is just one aspect of
the extensive work we do in this country.
Editor's note:
Our report did not say that World Vision did not spend any money or
tsunami recovery. It said that World Vision had not started any housing
project at the time we published the story though it has signed an MoU to
build several hundred housing units.
