Next Colombo Mayor: Azath Salley confident by Ananda Kannangara Colombo Municipal Council Deputy Mayor Azath Salley on Friday rejected certain reports, published in the weekend newspapers that the names of several party big wigs were focused by the UNP leadership as the mayoral candidate at the forthcoming CMC election anytime after October this year. "Although some sections of the media are trying to create chaos in the minds of the general public, especially people in the city limits by making such baseless statements, I am confident that the party leadership will never take such a decision to put any other person than me as the candidate for the next election," he said. He said he rendered much work to people in Colombo during his short tenure and he was confident of becoming the next CMC Mayor. Quoting few examples, the Deputy Mayor said that even in the past several Deputy Mayors in the CMC such as Hussain Mohamed, Omar Kamil, and K. Ganeshalingam later became Mayors for the good work done for the people. The Deputy Mayor also said that during his time commencing from year 2002, he completed many projects to uplift the living conditions of rate payers. "The day to day garbage collecting process, carried out by our workers in a methodical manner is highly impressed by both residents as well as other ordinary people who are usually coming to Colombo everyday," he said. campaign to remove unauthorised constructions in the city, especially at the
Bristol Street, without causing damage to the livelihood of the owners. |
