President's concern for PM's security

With mounting concern over VIP security following the Kadirgamar assassination among the first to bring this matter into sharp focus was President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga when she met her Prime Minister during the concluding ceremony of the Esala festival in Kandy.

Learning that Prime Minister Rajapakse had been occupying a corporation bungalow where understandably security was bound to be lax a concerned President immediately invited the Premier and his family to occupy President's House in Kandy for the remainder of their stay in the hill capital. The Premier realising the gravity of the situation promptly acceded to the President's request and moved into the President's House for the remainder of his stay.

The President prevailed on the Premier not to hesitate to seek shelter at President's House in future too considering risks posed to his safety. A grateful PM readily acceded to this Presidential request made before the Court ruling setting the Presidential Elections for 2005.
