Edirisinghe, Jayakoddy in Men's Doubles Final

Sri Lanka's experienced combination of Thushara Edirisinghe and Duminda Jayakoddy reached the final of the Men's Doubles event at the Satellite Badminton Championships organised by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Edirisinghe and Jayakoddy who are the bottom seeds beat the Malaysian pair of Cheah Like Hou and Chin Chun Jue in a three setter (15-6, 12-15, 15-9) and their opponents in today's final will be the top seeded combination from Thailand, Nattapon Naktong and Siwath Khoosakumthum who beat India's George Jose and Ajit Wijetilek in straight (15-5, 15-11). Two Sri Lankan combinations are also in the Mixed Doubles final. The top seeded pair of Thushara Edirisinghe and Chandrika de Silva got the better of Nepal's Balham Thapa and Pooja Shreetha comfortably in straight sets (15-4, 15-4), while Niluka Karunaratne and Thilini Jayasinghe beat Malaysia's Chin Chun Jue and Ester Ratna Dewi also in straight sets (15-8, 15-13).

Two other Sri Lankan pairs lost in the semi-finals of the Women's Doubles. Chandrika de Silva and Thilini Jayasinghe lost to India's Trupti Murugande and Meenakshi 2-15, 8-15, while Rasangi Ranatunga and Nadeesha Gayanthi lost to the top seeded Thai pair of Monthila Meemek and Soratja Chansrisukot (3-15, 2-15).

World ranked (No. 66) Chetan Anand the top seed from India won his semi-final in the Men's Singles beating Thailand's Poorasak Wiriyaphadungphong (15-3, 15-3), while in the other "semi" Malaysia's Yowv Thien Law beat India's Anand Pavar 17-15, 15-12. Thailand's Monthila Meemaka the top seed entered the final of the Women's Singles beating fourth seeded Meenakshi of India (11-1, 11-5), while Thailand's Sujitra Ekkongkolpaisar who was seeded No. 3 beat another lass from Thailand, Soratja Chansrisukot also in straight sets (11-5, 11-0) in the other semi-final.

All finals are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. today with the prize distribution at 12.45 p.m.
