Thomians retain Jayatilleke Shield Thomians retained the Lady Jayatilleke Memorial Shield for another year when they defeated St. Joseph's by 29 points (3 tries and 2 goals) to nil in a schools rugger match played at Havelock Park yesterday. The Thomians gave an impressive display in the initial half of the match with their forwards and back division combining well to send the Joes into submission and planted four tries out of which two were converted into goals. The Thomians sprang into the lead in the second minute of the match when winger Nilakshan Muthethetuwegama crossed the Joes line for an unconverted try. This was followed by two quick tries by full back Dinesh Siriwardena with Sadeva Dharmadasa giving them the extra points. Just before the short whistle the winners added another try into their tally when scrum half Ruwan Jayatissa intercepted a pass and covered good ground to touch down. The Thomians led 24-0 at the breather. On resumption the Thomians scored another try which went unconverted after prop Leelaratne touched down. With the Thomians enjoying a clear lead and the Joes striving hard to score, both sides made mistakes as the second half turned out to be a drab affair. Roshan Deen refereed. RA |
