Ricky back in town

By A. C. de Silva

In town right now is former Peterite rugby star and Old Thomian swimmer Ricky Gunawijeya from Melbourne, Australia on a short visit to the country of his birth to visit the many friends.

"Ricky" as he was affectionately called by all his friends in Sri Lanka was at St. Peter's College and played rugby for the school team and paired off with Frank Hubert as the halves combination. Ricky was a scrum half and he was known for his timely passes from the base of the scrum which was put to good use by Frank Hubert to help the Peterites on their scoring sprees in the inter-school games.

While rugby was probably his first "love" in those schooldays, he also played cricket and table tennis. In those early days (Ricky left St. Peter's in the year 1974-75) the Peterites had a habit or routine to sign up with Havelocks Sports Club, but he believed in making changes to the old custom and breaking tradition, he signed up with CR and FC.

Besides rugby football, Ricky was very fond of the water and he was a member of the Old Thomians' Swimming Club and represented the club in waterpole. He also represented the club in the annual two-mile sea swim and also in the six-mile sea swim organised by Kinross.

He couldn't go much far in rugby football because of a injury, but his interest in the game didn't die off. He watched many matches and still loves the game. Before injury, he even played rugby football for Travel Bag in the travel trade rugby sevens and they emerged champions for sevel years.

Right row, Ricky Gunawijeya is here with his son on a holiday and would like to meet old friends before he goes back to Melbourne on September 18. Ricky can be contacted on tel Nos: 2602273 (home) or on mobile: o779503036.
