Western Province retain overall trophy Chris Dhambarage reporting from Matale Western Province with a total of 238 points retained the Overall Trophy and the President's trophy for another year at the 31st National Sports Festival organised and conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, concluded at the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium in Matale yesterday. Yasasiri Ajith of North Western Province who won the men's 400 metres event was selected as the best male athlete while Jani Chaturangani also from North Western Province who won the women's 100 metres event was picked as the best female athlete. In fact North Western Province emerged runners up in the overall championship with 153 points. Central Province with a total of 142 points was placed third and Southern Province with a total of 117 points came fourth. Meanwhile R. K. E. P. Maduwanthi of North Western Province established a new meet record in the women's high jump event clearing a distance of 1.71 metres. She shattered the previous record of 1.70 metres jointly held by herself (2003) and Muditha Hiripitiya of Western Province way back in 1995. Meanwhile Western Province clinched the men's basketball tournament while defeating Southern Province by 98 points to 67 points in a completely one sided final. Heshan Premachandra of Western Province did most of the scoring and was also named as the most outstanding player of the final. In the women's football tournament final North Western Province defeated Uva Province 2 nil in the final with Dilani Shanika of North Western Province selected as the best player. Central Province won the women's hockey title defeating Western Province 4-1 in the final. Wasana Ekanayake of Central Province was picked as the most outstanding
