Rio Group condemns incitement to kill Chavez Buenos Aires, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) The 19 member countries of the Rio Group meeting in Argentina condemned Friday calls by US Reverend Pat Robertson to kill Venezuela President Hugo Chavez. Foreign affairs ministers of this permanent political consultation and coordination organization meeting in Bariloche said that Robertson's expressions were "a clear incitement to crime". In a joint declaration, ministers indicated their amazement at the US reverend's call, and demanded the commencement of appropriate legal proceedings. We view with amazement the declarations of the founder of the Christian Coalition, an organization linked with US Republican Party, calling for the assassination of the "democratically-elected president" of Venezuela, reads the text. "Assuming the fundamental principle of the defence of life we categorically reject such pronouncements and expect the instigation of appropriate legal action," the release stated. Argentinian Foreign Affairs Minister Rafael Bielsa, the host, said there was total consensus in the very emphatic rejection of the reverend's call for the assassination of democratic president Hugo Chavez. The Rio Group gave full support to Caracas Foreign Minister Ali Rodriguez, who demanded an investigation in the US into the reverend's statements, considering them a crime. "In any other country of the world, a judge would at the minimum conduct an investigation in such circumstances, " the official stressed. Rodriguez emphasized that in the US and in other modern nations "incitement and applauding crime are categorized as such, crimes, and are punished". |
