Nadika steals limelight
Nadika Muthunayake of Navy stole the limelight when she was
responsible for the solitary record in the Shot Put event at the two day
2nd National Selection trial conducted by the Athletic Association of
Sri Lanka held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.
Muthunayake throw the iron ball to record distance of 13.84 metres to
erase off her own mark of 13.33 metres. She had the new record in the
fifth attempt of the event. Sureka Niroshini Manchanayake of Track
Master SC was placed second 12.22 metres and Devni Madurapperuma of Sri
Lak AC took the third position - 11.87 metres.
P. K. P. Madumathi of Kurunegala DAA went over the bar with a height
of 1.70 metres to win the women's high jump. Dulani Ranaweera of Matara
DAA won the triple jump 11.58 metres. Amarasiri Warnakula of Kandy DAA
with good sprint won the girls under-20, 100 metres 12.33. secs.
In the mens' events T. N. D. Fernando of Sri Lanka Air Force had good
leap of 7.35 metres to win the long jump. G. I. Bandara of Sri Lak AC
won the 3,000 metres steeply chase - 8.56.41 secs, K. H. K. Gunathilake
of Sri Lanka Navy won the Javelin throw with a distance of 70.60 metres
and G. Jayawardena took the discuss throw 52.02 metres.
The trial will be continued today at 8 a.m. with 29 events to be
worked off. The selection committee of Athletic Association of Sri Lanka
will meet after the trials to select the national pool for training.
National Junior Athletic Meet
The Junior National Athletic Championships conducted by the AA Sri
Lanka will be held from June 16 to 18 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
Entries will close on May 31 with the Chairman Competition Committee,
AASL, No. 33, Torrington Avenue, Colombo 7.
Events will be worked off in five age categories under-12, under-14,
under-16, under-18, under-20, under-23 both boys and girls. L.F.
