Ban on sand transport

The transport of sand from Kegalle to other districts in lorries has been prohibited by the District Secretary (DS), Kegalle on the instructions of the Sabaragamuwa Province Chief Minister Maheepala Herath.

The D.S. said she had no objection to locals utilising river and stream sand for house construction and other useful purposes, which will be allowed only for two days in the week.

The C.M. said due to the large quantity of sand being transported to Colombo and other areas, the environment in the Kegalle district has been affected and it was decided at the last co-ordinating Committee meeting to ban the transport of sand outside the District.

The C.M. has also enforced a ban on sand mining with machines. Anybody violating this requirement will be severely dealt with, the C.M. said.
