IGP calls for public support
by Jayampathy Jayasinghe
IGP Chandra Fernando addressing a media conference at Police
Headquarters in Colombo this week said the LTTE has a history of
removing petrol tanks of vehicles and fitting them with high explosives
to cause destruction to life and property.
"There are several such garages that do tinkering jobs for the LTTE
and we want public to provide us with information", he noted. Meanwhile
the Police traced the man who purchased the motor cycle involved in
Major General Parami Kulatunga's assassination. He had purchased it from
a person in Wattala.
Meanwhile, the IGP cautioned the public to keep an eye on suspicious
three-wheelers. A number of three-wheelers that arrive from outstations
are involved in criminal activity.
A two member gang that extorted large sums of money from Tamil
businessman in Pettah were arrested last week. However investigations
revealed that many were not involved in terrorist activities. Their
'modus operandi' was to open a bank account and threaten businessmen to
deposit large sums of monies, the IGP said.
Answering a question posed by the media, as to how the woman suicide
cadre was able to penetrate the army headquarters, last May, DIG, (CID),
Asoka Wijetilleka said several persons are being questioned in that
regard and investigations were not completed as yet. |
