Kingswood win centenary game

Fly half Dev Anand kicked Kingswood to an emphatic 16 points (1 goal,
1 penalty, 2 drop goals) to 10 (2 tries) win over Trinity in their
Centenary Schools rugby match played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy
yesterday. At the breather Kingswoodians led 7-5.

It was in the 15th minute of this half that the scoreboard started
moving. A lapse on the part of Kingswood's scrum half saw Roshan
Weeraratne saw his vis-a-vis Nishantha Manickam taking possession of the
ball and sent a pass to No. 8 and skipper Imalka Maddumapatabendi who in
turn slung the ball to centre Kosala Tissera who ran about 20 metres
before touching down far left. Stand off Anojan Balasunderam kick at
goal was off mark and Trinity led 5-0.
Kingswood did not have to wait for too long to open their account as
they kept applying the pressing. In the 27th minute they were awarded a
penalty and Dev Anand taking the short tap worked the three quarters for
winger Rajitha Samaranayake to give the finishing touches far left. Fly
half Dev Anand made of good kick at goal to put Kingswood take the lead
7-5.
Soon after the turn around Kingswood's fly half Dev Anand put them
further ahead with a 30 metre drop goal. Kingswood 10-5. In the 21st
minute Dev Anand increased their lead through a 35 metre penalty.
Kingswood 13-5.
In the 25th minute of the second half another drop kick at goal from
30 metres put the Kingswoodians in the box seat leading 16-5.
In the dying stages of the game Trinity reduced through a push over
try under the post by skipper and No. 8 Imalka Maddumapatabendi but the
kick at goal was surprisingly fluffed. |
