Western Province in massive 85-0 win

Western Province trounced Southern Province (85-0) and Central Province beat Defence Services (32-18) at Havelock Park and Nittawela respectively over the last weekend in their Caltex-Inter-Provincial rugby matches sponsored by Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited and conducted by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU). Today, Southern Province will host Defence Services in Galle, while Western Province are the guests of Central Province at Nittawela.

The other games of the tournament are Central Province Vs Southern Province at Radella and Defence Services Vs Western Province at Havelock Park on October 8. (L.G.)

Peterites win 18-0

The reigning ‘A’ division league champions St. Peter launched their campaign for the President Trophy with an impressive 18 points to nil victory over their traditional rivals St. Joseph in the first quarter-final played at the Royal College grounds, yesterday.

The winners collected their points from three tries and one penalty after having led eight nil at half time.

Skipper and number eight Harendra Ariyawardena, wing three quarter Gerard Kenute and prop forward G. Karunaratne scored a try each for the Peterites with Harsha Weerakkody putting over a penalty.

Isuru Udana hits 52

D. S.Senanayaka’s Isuru Udana hit the highest individual score (52) while Joseph Vaz, Wenappuwa recorded the highest all time team score in the tournament 125 for 2 against Lumbini on the first day of the Lemonade Trophy sponsored Wesley Schools Six A Side cricket tournament at Campbell Park yesterday. D. S. Senanayake, De Mazenod, Kalutara MV and St. Joseph’s have already qualified to play in the quarter finals. The rest of the quarter finalists could be found only today after the second round matches.

D. S. Senanayake: 64 for 3 (Isuru Udana 52) beat Kingswood 42 for 4. Piliyandala MV 47 for 3 (I. Harshana 15) lost to Prince of Wales 49 (C. Thirimanne 21). Kegalu MV 71 for 3 (Saliya Tennekoon 29) beat St. Benedict’s 70 for 2 (Chanaka Wijewardena 28). Joseph Vaz 125 for 2 (Malith Pinto 37) beat Lumbini 34 for 2. S. Thomas’ 37 for 5 (Dinesh Soysa 20) lost to St. Joseph’s 40 for 0 (Dimuth Karunaratne 21 n.o. Thisara Perera 15 n.o. Zahira 32 for 5 lost to Nalanda 33 for 1 (D. Munaweera 16). Dharmapala 82 for 1 (Sameera Tharindu) beat Thurstan 51. `Ananda 57 for 3 lost to St. Sebastian’s 58 for 1 (L. Fernando 24). Isipathana 61 for 2 (Damith Kumara 19) lost to D. S. Senanayake 63 for 0 (Isuru Udana 33). Prince of Wales 50 for 4 (Isuru Gunasena 19) Lost to Kalutara MV 51 for 2 (Rumesh Ranga 24). Kegalu Vidyalaya 39 for 3 (S. Tennekoon 21) lost to De Mazenod 40 for 2 (Nilushan Nonis 20). Joseph Vaz 61 for 2 beat Hindu College 53 for 4. Holy Cross 59 for 2 lost to St. Joseph’s 61 for 1.

DS retain Hashan Tillekaratne Trophy

D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo retained the Hashan Tillekaratne Trophy for the third successive year when they registered a first innings win over Kingswood in their schools cricket match at Peradeniya yesterday.

Match winners for D. S. Senanayake College were left arm spinner Roshan Laksiri who captured a match bag of 10 for 65 and skipper Dimuthu Samarakoddy who scored 87 with 3 sixes and 6 fours and was involved in a 4th wicket stand of 110 with Madawa Perera 64 (7 fours).

Kingswood: 139 all out (P. Senaratne 20, R. Jayawansa 16, A. Amerasinghe 36, M. Bandaranayake 16 not out, Roshan Laksiri 6 for 31, M. Marasinghe 2 for 17) AND 139 for 8 wkts (Asiri Amerasinghe 23, N. Jayasuriya 31, M. Bandaranayake 26, Roshan Laksiri 4 for 34, M. Marasinghe 3 for 39).

D. S. Senanayake College: 225 for 8 wkts decl in 76 overs (D. Harischandra 22, L. Weragoda 22, Dimuthu Samarakoddy 87, Madawa Perera 64, R. Jayawansa 4 for 83, Chalitha Dharmaprema 4 for 56).
