Bad breath (halitosis) is very common and affects people of all ages. It is a bad smell or odour coming from the mouth, which can be embarrassing particularly when other people notice it before you do!

Many things can cause bad breath including:

* Dehydration - not drinking enough water throughout the day

* Eating strong foods such as onions and garlic

* Poor tooth brushing and dental care

* Smoking or drinking too much alcohol

* Illnesses such as a sinus infection, tonsillitis or indigestion

* Sucking your thumb, a pacifier or a blanket

* Gum disease.

A good way of finding out if your have bad breath is to lick the back of your hand and smell it. Or ask a close member of your family or a friend.

The best way to prevent bad breath is to improve your oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a week, brush the surface of your tongue and also your gums, and having regular check ups with your dentist.

A non-alcoholic based mouthwash or mouth spray might temporarily mask the symptoms.

If it continues, you should see your dentist. If you think it's linked to an illness such as tonsillitis then it's best to consult your doctor.
