Portfolios - UNP undecided
by Jayantha Sri Nissanka
The United National Party is yet undecided on accepting portfolios
under the proposed Memorandum of Understanding between the SLFP and the
UNP scheduled to be signed possibly on October 23.
The issue is still under discussion within the UNP. Some members are
canvassing for the portfolios while others seem to claim that the party
should support the Government sans portfolios.
“There is no truth in media reports that we will accept portfolios
because we have not yet thought about it”, UNP General Secretary Tissa
Attanayake told the Sunday Observer yesterday.
He said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa offered some portfolios to
the UNP under the new arrangement between the two parties. But the Party
was yet to decide whether to accept portfolios or not, he noted.
Attanayake said that the UNP Executive Committee will be meeting
tomorrow to get the official approval to the proposed MoU with the
Government. He stressed that nothing will be discussed pertaining to
portfolios because it was still kept in suspense. |
