Inter monsoonal rains to continue

The inter monsoonal rains will continue and over 70 millimetres rainfall was experienced in most parts of the country during the past few days, a spokesmen for the Meteorology Department told the Sunday Observer.

The North East monsoonal rains too will be activated within the next few days. As a result of heavy rains during the last few days the water levels of Kalu, Gin, Walawe, Manik Ganga, Kelani, Nilwala and Mahaweli rivers have increased sharply, he said.

The National Building Research Institution (NBRI) has warned the public about the possibility of sudden earthslips in Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matara, Galle and Hambantota districts.

The flood gates of the Mahaweli reservoirs and the main storage tanks will be open at any moment and the Irrigation Authorities have warned people not to bathe in the main canals. The public has also been urged not to stay in open areas or around trees during rain.
