UNP spells out plans for working committee
By Ananda Kannangara
The UNP on Friday revealed that members of various community
organisations in the country, ranging from professional organisations to
farmer and fishermen organisations will become part of its future
working committee.
In addition to this, various other organisations such as women,
University, trade unions and youth will also become representatives in
the future UNP working committee.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told the `Sunday Observer'
that all internal problems that had arisen within the party in the
recent past were solved amicably. "However, as unanimously decided, the
proposed `Political Reforms' will be completed within 100 days," he
said.
He said that according to the new political reforms, the party leader
has been empowered to appoint 15 members out of 117 in the working
committee.
Asked how the UNP will help the Government to bring a lasting
solution to the current ethnic conflict, Attanayake said that devolution
of power is the only solution to resolve the national question, while
introducing new economic reforms according to the MoU signed by the UNP
with the SLFP last month.
He said various political parties could present different views on
this most important crucial problem, but ultimately all parties will
have to accept the system of devolution of power.
The General Secretary said that all party members who gathered at the
party headquarters at Pitakotte last week agreed to follow the footsteps
and ideologies of former party stalwarts such as D.S. Senanayake, Dudley
Senanayake, J.R Jayewardene and R. Premadasa when taking decisions. |
