Vesak go hi-tech!
by Chanuka Mannapperuma
The vision for life and the doctrine to follow were the exemplary
qualities of his life, embedded with love, compassion, happiness and
joy. The enlightenment was spiritual. Such were the sentiments of the
Buddha.
According to history, Vesak has been celebrated over 2500 years. That
is why Vesak is significant to millions of Buddhist devotees world over.
Vesak marks his Birth, Enlightenment and Parinibbana (passing away). As
everyone knows Vesak is a season of religious activity.
You step on to the road, there will be mini and mega-shops selling
Vesak cards, boutiques with readymade lanterns and other decorations. On
the other hand, to mark the 'Aamisa pooja' (dana ceremony) religious
minded citizens put 'Dansals.'
However, there are many who do not approve the manner in which this
significant day is celebrated by some. In the early days, we saw parents
and kids quite busy getting ready for the Vesak creations like lanterns.
But, now there are devotees play a quiet role without any celebrations.
Is it due to their busy schedules in their day-to-day life or due to
lethargy? Children of today are burdened with tuition classes and
additional activities. The elders are faced with domestic issues.
In our childhood days,we used to make Vesak lanterns, decorations,
oil lamps made out of king coconut shells and also organised dansalas.
This scenario is entirely different now.
Past practices and traditions seem to have disappointed. The practice
of sending Vesak cards to your dear ones have been done away with.
Today the SMS electronic system has replaced tradition. Lord Buddha's
image is displayed on mobile phones with the greetings or MMS.
Modern way of life do not inculcate the truth religious spirit that
ushers in the doctrine of Lord Buddha. The hoisting of the Buddhist flag
at homes too are very scarce nowadays.
It is tragic, no doubt! |
