Dr. James Ross

The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka will be in concert today at the Ladies College Hall commencing 7 pm.

The Orchestra will be conducted by the guest conductor Dr. James Ross in Rossini's Overture to the Barber of Seville, and two romantic works Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 2 and Dvorak's popular Symphony No. 8. Ananda Dabare will be the soloist in the Violin Concerto.

This is the fourth time the young British conductor Dr. James Ross has been in Sri Lanka to conduct the concerts of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka.

The Music Director of Oxford's Christ Church Festival Orchestra and of several other orchestra's and choruses in the United Kingdom, he has conducted in more than twelve countries and is a contributor to the magazines Opera and Musical Times.

Dr. Ross has a doctorate in French Opera from Oxford and has conducted over 600 works.

Keerthi - Gee Golden Concert

Keerthi Pasquel the balladeer will be staging his one man concert on May 11 at the BMICH commencing 7.00 p.m. He will be singing twenty-six of his famous popular songs. A creative composer of songs Keerthi Pasquel will be backed by the acknowledged musician Sarath de Alwis and his orchestra.

"This concert of mine is to raise funds to help new singers to record CDs for release and at the concert I am supported in duets by Dhammika Bandara, Damitha Abeyratne, Mariazelle and Pradeep Bogahawatte," says Keerthi.

The Concert will also feature dance items by Channa Wijewardena, Himali and the Sensations, Thesara Jayawardena and the Latin American dance exponent Anushan Perera.


Jazz soiree

The month of May has inspired many a composer to write music and songs which radiate happiness to all. So leading jazz musicians will be banding together today to spread the happy vibes of their creative artistry at the CR and FC from 1.30 pm onwards.

There's going to be a lot of surprises we understand. The songbirds Judy de Silva and Kanthi will be in action at 1.30 pm backed by Hilary Christie piano, Shanti Seneviratne drums and Basil Paiva - bass. The featured band will see the leading saxophonist Rodney van Heer playing with the well known guitarist Revel Crake and Ray Gomes - bass, Shiraaz Wooramith - drums. In the vocal spotlight will be Jean van Heer.
