The cello music instrument that is nit as popular as the piano, here in Sri Lanka is centre stage this week when the Cantando Cello ensemble presents it's third annual recital on July 5 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7.30 p.m. The ensemble comprises eleven young cellists and is directed by the acknowledged cellist Dushy Perera.

The programme according to the director will be works by composers familiar to Sri Lankan music lovers, music from Baroque to Modern. The selections include J.S. They say that "the cello is one of the unique and versatile instruments able to play in both treble and bass ranges, able to capture a spectrum of moods, styles and techniques and therefore lending itself to arrangements of varying styles, voicings and textures".

According to Dushy Perera the Cantando ensemble got its name from the Italian language of a term describing a "singing" sound. The cello is unique in that it could be played in both treble and bass ranges and captures a spectrum of moods, styles and techniques. The Box Plan for the concert is at the Lionel Wendt.
