Neelan Tiruchelvam memorial lecture
Dr. Gareth Evans, former Foreign Minister of Australia and President
and Chief Executive of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group (ICG)
will deliver the eighth Neelan Tiruchelvam Memorial Lecture on today
July 29 at 6.00 pm at the BMICH Committee Room 'A'.
He will speak on "The Limits of State Sovereignty: The Responsibility
to Protect in the 21st Century."
Gareth Evans was one of Australia's longest serving foreign
ministers, best known internationally for his roles in helping to
develop the UN peace plan for Cambodia, bring to a conclusion the
International Chemical Weapons Convention, found the Asia Pacific
Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and Asean Regional Forum (ARF), and
initiate the Canberra Commission on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
A member of the Australian Parliament for 21 years and as a Cabinet
Minister in the Hawke and Keating Labour Governments for thirteen years.
Dr. Evans has been since January 2000 President and Chief Executive
of the International Crisis Group which is generally recognised now as
one of the world's leading independent, non-partisan, sources of
analysis and advice on the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict.
Former Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in India Mangala Moonesinghe
will preside. |
