Opposition Leader should put his house in order first -
Attorney-at-Law

Senior Attorney-at-Law Upali Senaratne commenting on the statement
made by Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said the people in the
East at last breathed a sigh of relief having been freed from the
clutches of the LTTE. The leader of the opposition does not seem to be
happy over this victory and the statements are being made in order to
weaken the morale of the forces at this psychological hour.
The people have not forgotten how individual members of the SLFP were
bribed by the UNP and toppled the government of Sirimavo Bandaranaike in
1964. One of the key figures who masterminded the coup was very close to
the leader of the opposition. There have been so many instances of this
nature engineered by the opposition in order to gain power and remain in
power.
If the President in any manner helped support and countenanced to
become the President of this country, this would not have been the way
of showing his gratitude from day one, the President has been against
the anti-democratic insurgent terrorist activities of the LTTE.
In order to curb, crib and contain the terrorist activities, a
limited campaign was launched by the forces in order to bring peace to
the country. The UNP has faced the worst debacle in their long history
as a political party. Those who mattered to the party had already left
and joined the government. Those who remain in the UNP are now
contemplating resigning from the UNP Party and strengthen the hands of
the President in order to finish the balance problems, the Government is
saddled with.
It is better if the leader of the opposition does something concrete
to put his house in order rather than making wild allegations and
concocting incredible stories in order to distract the attention of the
people from their main focus of attention. |
