Popular Kismet artistry

It's no wonder that with a repertoire of hits of the 60s, 70s, 80s plus the crazy beat of hip hop, Kismet have fast acquired popularity in our music scene. The members are no strangers to the scene, even though there is fresh young talent in the outfit.

Kismet

Theirs is a special sound that has proved to be a winner. Just a few days ago they kept the audience in a happy mood (at a corporate function) with their combined vocal stylings and musical artistry.

Drucille and Priya who have had extensive experience handle all the arrangements and performances. Both are multi instrumentalists who can tackle their respective instruments with absolute ease. Priya a drummer, plays latin percussion and her vocals have always made audiences stop and listen.

Drucille directs the group through many rhythms with her keyboards and guitar artistry and of course has like Priya a fund of vocals that is extremely appealing. Chester's drum language pushes the group to give of their best whatever the rhythm, whatever the song.

The much welcome talent of the youth musicians in the outfit adds further attraction. There's Teri on vocals, Nalaka on bass, Thushantha - on guitar and vocals and Nirantha - keyboards and vocals.

These youngsters give the hip touch to the band.Speaking to Priya and Drucille the other day they clued us in that a three piece outfit from the band comprising both of them and vocalist Teri play weekly on Friday nights as well at the lounge of the Galadari Hotel and judging from the music requests they get between 7.30 pm and 12 midnight they are happy with the response.

The whole band Kismet has been featured at many dances, dinner theatres, corporate functions and with the wedding season in full swing now they've had their share of eating the cake and enjoying it too!

Los Paraguayos perform Anura's songs

The Trio Los Paraguayos with Luis Alberto Del Parana took the global music scene by storm in the 1950s. Their famous music sung to the backing of a harp and three Spanish guitars was the rage.

Here in Sri Lanka with the national radio, Radio Ceylon (now SLBC), airing their catchy popular rhythms, many singers and musicians were influenced by the music.

Neville Fernando and the Los Caberellos was one group who was successful in creating a new wave in Sri Lankan music in this style, later followed by groups like La Ceylonians and others that sprang up quickly.

Anura Jayasinghe now in Paris gave us the good news that the famous Los Paraguayos requested written permission to record three of his songs as instrumentals. "It look me by surprise when Gladys Meza the current manager of the band contacted me and gave me the information that the group was performing three of my songs as instrumentals.

The three songs are Hirubesa Yanakala , Welcome to Sri Lanka and Mudali Thuma . These three songs are from my latest CD Sri Lanka Sitting Pretty in the Ocean . I am happy that my songs will give enormous publicity to Sri Lankan music.

Los Paraguayos will be recording the three instrumentals and I will be receiving royalties whenever they perform. They've asked me to come to Paraguay and perform with them which I will do so soon" says a happy Anura, whose video clip Nidi Nethi Re Yama will be telecast four times a day on Telesude, Paris on a two year contract.

Three Tal - making new waves

Three Tal

Their name may sound unusual to you, but you can be assured that they are no longer stagnant in the wings. Three Tal is the name of the group and they are making waves at most of the tourist hotels down south with their unplugged music.

Three Tal comprises box guitarist Dissanthi Jayasinghe lead singer who headlines the group. The Mandolin is in the capable hands of Chanaka Sri Pushpakumara while Nalin Jayasinghe plays the accordion and Wijesinghe keeps the exciting beat on the Congo drum.

The quartet came into the limelight from Kotte determined to create a lasting impression in the music scene. They recorded some of their songs on CD and were more than surprised at the response the CD had at the hotels they performed.

From the Southern circuit Three Tal have moved into the Colombo circuit to perform at functions that they have been contracted for.
