Dayaratne leads in BASL polls

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) held elections on Friday to elect a new President and Secretary of the most influential lawyers' body.

Up to yesterday of the results announced W. Dayaratne was ahead of Upul Jayasuriya for the post of President.

Udaya Rohan de Silva was in the lead against Ranawaka for the post of Secretary. Three candidates contested the President's post.

They are former Presidents of the Colombo Law Society and senior members of the BASL, W. Dayaratne and a senior lawyer from Jaffna S. Thangaragah.

The Secretary's post was contested by P. R. Ranawaka of the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Courts Lawyer's Association and former Assistant Secretary of the BASL Udaya R. de Silva.

The Acting Attorney General Priyasath Dep was the returning officer assisted by Deputy Solicitor General Vijitha Malalgoda, Deputy Solicitor General Shavindra Fernando and Senior State Counsel Sobitha Rajakaruna.

The final results of the polls will be released tomorrow.
