Massalage, Lilan excel in drawn game

Thurstan’s Geeth Kumara slams a ball over the long-on boundary for a six in his knock of 38. Thurstan made 200 in reply to Isipathana’s 140 in their first innings in their 45th Big Match at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday. Pic. by Thilak Perera

CRICKET: Top score by Thurstan Indika Massalage who hit a brisk 62 and all rounder Lilan Fernando of Isipatana unbeaten 61 and claimed 4 for 84 highlights of the final day's play in the Thurstan vs Isipatana 45th Big Match which ended in a draw at the SSC grounds yesterday.

The opener was in fine form and delighted the poor crowd with a wide range of strokes, (8 fours and 1 six) while Lilan Fernando rescued the Isipatana with a stubborn unbeaten 62 with 4 fours and bowled intelligently to restrict the Thurstanites.

Thurstan continuing from their overnight 32 for no loss declared at 200 for 7. Openers Indika Massalage and Shehan Kamaleen 31 with 5 fours put on good 94 runs stand. Geeth Kumara also made a useful contribution of 38 with 5 fours and 1 six.

Sakuntha Premaratne off spinner captured 3 for 48 and supported the paceman Lilan.

Isipathana batting a second time with a defecit of 59 runs were struggling with their top batsmen back in the pavilion for just 72 runs. But Dimuth Warapitiya (20) together with Lilan Fernando batting with correct technique rescued the side adding a valuable 40 runs for the sixth wicket.

At stumps Isipatana were 177 for 8 Thurstan skipper Umesh Karunaratne (the Sri Lanka under-19 World Cup player with 4 for 58) and B. Samarawickrema 3 for 17 bowled their spin to good effect.
