The members of the Galle Muslim Cultural Association (GMCA) are up in
arms against the move by owners of the GMCA building who are planning to
sell it to foreigners.
The GMCA, an approved charity organisation which has been in
existence for the past 45 years, has been promoting religious, cultural,
educational and social activities for adults and children, in addition
to educational scholarships, holding competitions and with a fully
equipped library, indoor sports room and training activities for
religious and self-employment services.
The residents of Galle Fort, the Muslim community and Bhikkhus have
signed a petition against this proposal.
Secretary of the GMCA, Shafli Sassim said that they are ready to
purchase the premises for Rs. 100 lakhs, but it was turned down by the
owners.
The building inside the Galle Fort is in close proximity to the
mosque. "We have sent a memorandum on this matter of religious and
cultural importance to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Southern Province
Chief Minister, Shan Wijeylal De Silva and the Chairman, Galle Heritage
Foundation, UNESCO funded organisation.
The GMCA members are perturbed that a foreign buyer is interested in
the building. |
