RUGBY: Remember R. P. Linton the fearless tackler of the Police rugby side in the 1970's?

He was the first non commissioned officer to captain the Police rugby side in 1976. Linton joined the Police Department in 1958 as a Constable straight from school from Tangalle and retired as a Chief Inspector in November 1999.

When Linton led Police to success in 1976, some of the other top players in the side were Daya Jayasundera, Ibrahim Hameed, Bandula Wijesinghe, Banda, Thirumani, R. M. Lafir, the late Charles Wijewardene and the present President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), DIG Nimal Lewke,

Linton who lives in Kuliyapitiya and a Senior Technical Officer of the SLRFU, serving the North Western Province RFU, was promoted to the rank of ASP effective March 1999 after he made on appeal to the Police Commission in 2005. (L.G.)
