Say no to racial discrimination
Among the many days that are observed this week is the International
Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination which takes place on
March 21.
This day is especially important for a country such as Sri Lanka,
which happens to be multi-racial. Global ceremonies in this regard will
be carried out by the offices of the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees in Geneva, New York and other areas.
It was on March 21, 1960 that police opened fire and killed 69 people
at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid in Sharpeville, South
Africa.
Laws proclaiming March 21 as the International Day for the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination were passed in 1966. The UN General
Assembly has called on the international community to redouble efforts
to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
The day should be used to raise awareness about racial equality.
The event should not only remind governments and the public about the
consequences of racial discrimination, but also about everyone’s
obligation and determination to combat this scourge. Discrimination of
all forms is not only a violation of human rights, but is also a major
obstacle to achieving peace. |
