Bogus agents dupe Lankans in Singapore

The Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore draws the attention of the public to a number of scams carried out by unscrupulous recruitment agents who obtain large sums of money from Lankans with the promise of education and employment opportunities in Singapore .

A large number of such persons have been abandoned by their agents upon their arrival in Singapore and face serious difficulties. Many have been stranded in Singapore without food, lodging and funds and on several occasions faced penalties for overstaying.

The High Commission has intervened on several occasions to assist these persons by either facilitating their return home or obtaining an amicable settlement between the two parties.

Given the increasing number of victims the High Commission warns the public against these bogus agents, and recommends verification of their bona fides, before making any financial commitments with respect to education and employment in Singapore.
