Themed Essential Computing: Simplifying and Enriching All Aspects of
Work and Daily life will be addressed by Andrew A. Chien, Vice
President, Corporate Technology Group Director, Intel Research Intel
Corporation. Over the past four decades, computing has excelled at
analytical and clerical tasks, but in the 21st century, the centre of
gravity has shifted - mobile computing devices are transforming society,
empowering a broad range of social and personal activities.
Intel Research's bold "Essential Computing" vision is focused on
creating research breakthroughs which make technology more intuitive,
helpful and robust. Such capabilities allow computing to enhance the
essence of our lives - not just our work, but our personal relationships
and growth, sense of community, and life experience. Central to this
vision is a major research effort to enable "Everyday Sensing and
Perception" which involves sensors, vision, machine learning and human
interaction to achieve an unprecedented new capability.
Under the Essential Computing vision, our research activities are
organised into six multidisciplinary themes: "Personal Awareness",
increasing the ability of computing systems to conform to and support
our personal needs, habits and ambitions, "Richly Communicative", which
allows us to easily form and enrich relationships, "Physicality", which
actuates everyday objects, connecting the cyber and physical worlds,
"Concealing Complexity", to simplify every aspect of use and
configuration of technology - it just works!, "Data Rich", unleashing
the power of Internet-scale data sets and "Biosensors", connecting the
biological and computing worlds at a molecular level.
Kevin C. Kahn, Intel Senior Fellow, Corporate Technology Group
Director, Communications Technology Lab Intel Corporation will speak on
the theme redefining mobility. What does the mobile future look like? As
we are on the move, more and more of our everyday lives, we ask
ourselves: Has mobile technology kept up with our lives? Can technology
make life simpler by delivering what we want, when and where we want it?
Kevin Kahn, Intel Senior Fellow, takes a technical view of current
industry trends that are converging to enable new user experiences and
redefining our views of mobility.
Technology Insight This Technology Insight will explore key
communications and platform technology advances that make this future
possible as well as the technical challenges that need to be addressed.

Lankan banking systems to implement Basel II risk compliance
All stakeholders in the financial services industry explored the
compliance challenges faced by Sri Lankan financial institutions and
global trends in GRC at a recent seminar on governance, risk and
compliance (GRC). Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. Ranee
Jayamaha told a seminar organised by i-flex solutions, a leading
provider of IT solutions to the global financial services industry and
Keells Business Systems Limited, a premier systems integrator in Sri
Lanka that it was time to change, urging all stakeholders in the
financial services industry to pursue a multi faceted approach to deal
with GRC.
"It is important that banks and financial institutions change this
mindset to pave the way for GRC management and also to avoid operational
losses due to product failures and frauds. Risks arising in these areas
could spread beyond the financial institution concerned and have the
potential to affect the entire industry," said Jayamaha.
The Deputy Governor outlined the challenges that most financial
institutions could encounter in implementing GCR amidst ongoing
increasing globalisation, continuously changing laws and regulations,
various forms of financial stresses and continuous evolution of complex
financial products. She said that these challenges would underscore the
importance of compliance and best practice, which have already been set
by the financial services industry regulators and supervisors as well as
the international standard setters.
flex Solutions Head (Business Development) for Reveleus and Mantas
and Risk and Compliance Solutions Principal Architect Saloni Ramakrishna
said, "In the present financial industry environment, where stakeholders
and other interested parties put pressure for greater transparency and
corporate responsibility, the Board of Directors and senior management
have to set high standards in all aspects of GRC. |
