e-village programme gets a boost
The
e-village programme, jointly implemented by the Secondary Education
Modernisation Project (SEMP) of the Ministry of Education and the
President’s Office in five provinces, is aimed at empowering rural
communities.
This is expected to be achieved by improving the Information
Technology literacy rate, information sharing and creating employment
opportunities.
The first phase of the programme was implemented in the Central,
Sabaragamuwa, Western, Uva and Southern Provinces. Its second phase
would see the construction of community computer centres besides the
computer learning centres at schools.
The success of the programme in Mahavilachchiya had prompted
President Mahinda Rajapaksa to advise the Ministry of Education to
initiate the e-village concept in selected rural communities.
Accordingly, the SEMP has already established five projects in five
villages. Once these projects are successfully completed, the programme
would be further extended on a long-term basis. |
