China’s efforts to counter terrorism
Chinese President Hu Jintao has assured his touring Sri Lankan
counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa that China will stand by Sri Lanka in its
efforts to counter terrorism. This assurance was given when the two
Presidents met at the Yalong Bay Resort in the Hainan Province.
This was the second meeting between the two leaders in 14 months, and
is indicative of the strengthened links between the two countries and
the rapid emergence of China as one of the key development partners of
Sri Lanka.
Restructuring of NPC soon
The restructuring process of the National Paper Company (NPC) Ltd.,
will commence shortly. The Government plans to restructure the Company
in a profitable manner with minimum labour in view of the quality and
demand for the Paper/Board items manufactured by the NPC, especially the
Valaichchenai Paper Mill.
LTTE bunkers attacked
The Security Forces attacked LTTE bunkers along the front lines in
the North, killing 13 terrorists and wounding 11 soldiers. In the
Welioya region where heavy fighting has been reported in recent months.
Army troops launched an assault on two rebel bunkers along the front
lines and killed four Tigers. In nearby Vavuniya district, a
confrontation killed three LTTE cadres and wounded six soldiers, he
said.
Lankan peacekeepers shot at
Three UN peacekeepers from Sri Lanka serving in Haiti were shot in
the Haitian capital, Port-Au-Prince by unknown gunmen. According to the
UN, the Lankan peacekeepers were on patrol in the Martissant district, a
poor neighbourhood in the capital when they were shot.
Arbour condemns killings
High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour has strongly
condemned the suicide bombing which killed Minister Jeyeraj
Fernandopulle and 14 others.
She also extended her condolences to the bereaved families of the
victims.
Lankan in the running in US
Daraka Sanjeewa Sedera, a permanent resident of the US for over a
decade has created history by becoming the first person of Sri Lankan
origin to run for high political office in the State Assembly in the
State of Nevada. |
