Heavy rains, a boon

Heavy rains in the country have benefited irrigation, forestry and hydro energy generation. Many hydro power reservoirs and irrigation tanks have reached spill level, according to the weathermen.

The Director of the Climate Change division at the Metereological Department Sarath Premalal said, “Even though weather conditions have changed dramatically, we can see the positive side of it too”.

H. M. Jayatilleke of the Department of Irrigation said, “The 58 reservoirs under the Department except the Pallanoya and Morawewa reservoirs have reached spill level making it favourable for agriculture”.

The Conservator General of Forests P.A.U.S Fernando said, “Heavy rains in the dry zone areas are necessary because it helps in developing the forestry around that area”.

The General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), D.R Pulleperuma told the Sunday Observer that following the recent rains the hydro storage capacity of the plants had increased.
