A top level meeting will be convened by the Commissioner of Elections
Dayananda Dissanayake with election officials in the Eastern province in
Colombo tomorrow to assess the overall situation and the polls related
arrangements made by the Department of Elections in the region.
Commissioner Dissanayake will brief senior election officials from
the districts of Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Ampara on the arrangements
that were in place to hold the Provincial Council polls in the East on
May 10 where around one million voters are expected to cast their votes,
informed sources said.
According to sources the election campaign which began with the
submission of nominations for the polls on March 13, will end on May 7
midnight.
The sources also added that compared to the recent local Government
polls in the Batticaloa district the campaign in Batticaloa, Trincomalee
and Ampara was very active despite certain isolated incidents.
Security for the May 10 polls in the East has been strengthened and
the Security top brass is also expected to air their views at the
Election Chief’s meeting tomorrow in Colombo.
Meanwhile, the training sessions for Assistant Returning Officers in
all three districts are currently in progress and more officials from
other parts of the country are expected to join the officials from the
three districts to carry out election duties. |
