India remain unbeaten with 29 run win over Sri Lanka

CRICKET: Sri Lanka were bowled out for 198 in the fifth ball of the last over as Indians scored a 29 run victory to remain unbeaten in the Women’s Cricket Asia Cup 2008 at the Rangiri Dambulla Cricket Stadium yesterday.India won the toss and elected to bat and laid steady platform by scoring 227 runs. Skipper Shashikala Sririwardene and Suwini de Alwis shared three wickets each.

India got off to a great start as K.V. Jain and J. Sharma built a 61 run partnership to lay a strong foundation for Indian innings. But Sharma could not stay for long and followed her opening partner to the pavilion after just five runs were added to the total.

The Indian skipper Mithali Raj hit a brilliant knock of 54 in 63 balls including nine boundaries to lift their score. She got involved in another convincing 62 run partnership for the fourth wicket with Priyanka Roy who made 41.

After that the Indians could not make any appreciable partnerships till the end of their innings. Devika Pulshikar was the only player to pass double figures (22).

Sri Lankans were looked confident from the beginning. Dedunu Silva looked much positive as she hammered 12 boundaries and a six in her 87 ball innings.

Neetu Davis dropped Chamari Polgampola at 6 and she could add another six runs to her score before she was caught at second slip by Goswami.

Dilani Maodara, the next one was out LBW without scoring. After a 51 run

partnership was built, opener Dedunu Silva was bowled by Rumeli Dhar after a brilliant knock of 74.

From that time the Indian total looked so big to be chased by the Lankans as the required run rate was climbing. The Lankans were not able to stand up with that obstacle in front of them. As the lower batting order collapsed from then on, ending their innings on 198.

BANGLADESH WIN

Bangladeshi women recorded a superb four wicket victory over Pakistan in their second appearance of the Women’s Cricket Asia Cup at Welagedera

Stadium in Kurunegala.

Pakistani women were not confident in front of the tournament debutants as they were bowled out for 134 runs in 47.4 overs.

Only four players were able to get beyond 12 runs.

Bismah Maroof top scored with 29 runs while Sajjida Shah and Sana Mir added 25 runs each to the Pakistani total.

Tithy Sarkar bagged four wickets for 25 runs.
