Trinity ‘Lions’ continue winning streak

RUGBY: Trinity College, Kandy continued their winning streak in their inter school Singer League under 20 rugby tournament when they trounced Vidyartha College by 60 points (5 goals, 5 tries) to 9 points (3 penalties) win at Nittawela rugby stadium yesterday.

At the short breather Trinity led 15-9.

Though it was Trinitians game, Vidyartha made a bold start working the line at every given opportunity and kept the “Lions” on check in the first half. But on Trinitians part the young side never panicked.

They played according their plan with their huge forwards where the wind was against them. But then in the second half they cut loose to score 7 unanswered tries through their three-quarters.

But the Trinitians cut the deficit through a superb number 8 try by Rushdy Ramzeen who was outstanding in his new position after playing as hooker last season. Five minutes later Vidyartha increased their lead through Hirindu Wijeratne’s second penalty kick at goal.

But it was shortlived as Trinity prop Mohamed Riyazie crashed through the opponent gave to score and take his side to a 10-9 lead. Minutes before half time centre Shanon Armstrong sliced through to score an converted try to take 15-9 lead.

In the second half it was one way traffic as the Trinitians worked their speedy three quarters at every given opportunity. They piled up 45 points in this half. Tries were flowing all most from all the moves. They scored through Kenon Armstrong. Ishrath Sinhalaxana, Mohamed Hamid, Viswajith Wijesinghe (3), and Rushdy Ramzeen. Kenon Armstrong was on target at conversions on five occasions.

Referee-Mohamed Cader. In the junior games Trinity won easily. Under 14 by 35-0 and under 16 by 24-0.
