Joes in convincing win over Wesley
By Ranjan Anandappa
RUGBY: St. Joseph's recorded their second successive win beating
Wesley convincingly by 27 points (1 goal, 4 tries) to 10 (1 goal and a
penalty) in their Singer school rugger match played at St.Peter's
College grounds Bambalapitiya yesterday.
Wesley started off well making advances into the Joes territory in
the first ten minutes or so and crossed the touch line when centre Asmin
Omar pierced the Josephian defence. Dulanjan Perera added the extra
points.
The Wesleyites increased their lead through a penalty put over by
Perera and led 10-0.
However, their joy was short lived when the Joes got their act
together with their forwards and backs combining effectively, as Wesley
gradually lost their way.
Josephian flanker Dananjaya Perera reduced the lead in the 15th
minute when he touched down and Dilshan Devananda gave them the extra
points. Two unconverted tries scored by flanker Adrian Hackel gave the
Joes a good 17-10 lead at the breather.
Flanker Hackel covered almost the entire length of the ground to
score his first try and followed up the second rapidly to expose the
Wesleyites weakness.
From that point onwards the Wesleyites had little or no chance of
bouncing back into contention.
On resumption the Joes struck twice through winger Navin Abeyratne
and Dilshan Devananda.
The easy conversions were missed by Dilshan Devananda ,otherwise the
score margin would have looked more impressive for he Joes.
