ATHLETICS: Junior National athlete D. Amali Marshani Wijesinghe of St. Joseph’s BV Kegalle and I. M. Herath of Wallala Ratnayake Central, Manikhinna established two new meet records on the penultimate day at the Junior National Athletic Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The 18-year-old Wijesinghe who represented Sri Lanka at the September 2007 Singapore Open Championships went over the hurdle in perfect style to set the record in the girls under-20 - 100 metres hurdles ‘clocking’ 15.15 secs.

She erased off the previous marks held by M. N. Kalupahana of Sumana BV, Ratnapura 15.43 secs in 2006. Wijesinghe also achieved a good double winning the 400 metres hurdles with a time of 1.08.11 secs.

Herath accounted for the second record in the boys under-16 - 800 metres returning a time of 2.05.1 secs. Sanjeewa Udayanga of Rahula College, Matara held the earlier record 15.43 secs in 2006.
