A project to provide mechanised agricultural equipment and introduce
technology to farmers was launched at the Agriculture Ministry,
Battaramulla last week.
"Agricultural mechanisation units will be set up at 540 Govijana
Kendras- the agrarian services centres islandwide, said Agriculture
Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara. He said labour shortage is one of the
major problems faced by farmers.
"Introducing mechanised agriculture equipment to rural farmers is the
best solution", he said.
Introducing mechanised equipment will also help to improve the
productivity.
The Agriculture Ministry will provide the agricultural equipment to
the mechanisation units of the Govijana Kendraya and the youth who will
be selected from the area will be trained to use those equipment.
The government expects the private sector participation and support
to manufacture and market the mechanised agricultural equipment.
Hansamack paddy sowing machine-paddyseeder which was manufactured by
Hansa Industries and marketed islandwide by Machwoods Limited was
introduced by the Agriculture Minister at the ceremony.
The new machine would help to reduce the overhead cost of agriculture
production, he said. |
