Sports Officer Nanayakkara dies

Death of Sportsman: Nimal Sisira Kumara Nanayakkara, Sports Officer,
Kandy attached to the Sports Ministry died suddenly on the 10th of May.
He was an outstanding sportsman who excelled in rugby and cricket at St.
Anthony's College and later at Vidyartha, Kandy.
Nimal was a dashing left-hand batsman in cricket and a reliable
place-kicker in rugby. After leaving school he played for Kandy Sports
Club in the Clifford Club rugby tournament in the eighties. After
joining the Sports Ministry in 1976, he represented the Sports Ministry
cricket team and they became the 'A' division Government service
Champions.
He also toured Maldives with the Sports Ministry cricket team under
Dr. Sarath Seneviratne in 1982 and 1984. His eldest son, Sanjaya
captained the Vidyartha cricket team in 2001 and younger son, Harsha
captained the Vidyartha side in 2002. Nimal served at Medagama,
Udadumbara and Matale before taking over duties in Kandy. He was the
sports co-ordinator of the Central Province Sports teams at the National
Sports Festival since 1992.
His funeral took place on 12th of May.
