St. Peter's u.19 basketball champions

BASKETBALL: St. Peter's College emerged champions in the u.19 All-Island Inter-School Basketball Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association.

This was a fine achievement because the Peterites won the championship trophy after 20 years. There were 16 schools that participated in the tournament.

On their way to championship honours the Peterites lost their first match to De Mazenod College, Kandana by a single point - 62 points 63. In the second match, St. Peter's beat S. Thomas' Mount Lavinia by 65 points to 43.

Then in their match to qualify for the quarter-finals, St. Peter's beat Azhar College, Kandy by 63 points to 38. In the quarter-finals, the Peterites beat St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa by 67 points to 45. In the semi-finals, St. Peter's beat St. Anne's College Kurunegala by 79 points to 45.

Came the semi-finals and the Peterite team had to play against De Mazenod College, Kandana to whom they lost the first match. The final turned out to be different. St. Peter's turned the tables and beat De Mazenod College by 65 points to 49.

Besides winning the main award two Peterites - Shenal Dias and Aaron Gomez won individual awards. Shenal Diaz was adjudged as the Best Player of the tournament and Aaron Gomez was picked as the Best Offensive Player.
