RUGBY: Defending champions Kandy Sports Club staged a superb second half rally to beat CH and FC by 30 points (two goals, two tries and two penalties) to 17 (one try, four penalties) in their Caltex ‘A’ Division League rugby match played at Maitland Crescent yesterday after trailing 8-11 at half time to keep their unbeaten record intact.

The lads from Maitland Crescent came up with a gallant display to rattle Kandy SC in the first half with some fierce tackling and had the honour of taking the lead through a superb try by scrum-half Tuan Shamrock and two penalties fired across by fly-half Omar Hassen to which Kandy SC could reply only with a try by No. 8 Imran Bisthamin and a penalty put over by scrum-half Saliya Kumara.

But the defending champions came up with a sterling display in the second half helped by their power packed forwards and a dazzling display of open rugby by their famed three-quarters to score three more tries through centre Pradeep Liyanage (two) and lock-forward Sumedha Jayasinghe (one) of which one was converted by scrum-half Saliya Kumara while full-back Radhika Hettiarachchi added the extra points to another try.

In the dying stages of the game full-back Radhika Hettiarachchi put over a 30-metre penalty to make it 30-17 at the final whistle.

In the second half CH & FC fly-half Omar Hassen who gave a fine display of place kicking fired across three penalties to keep them in the game.
